Nuremberg Day 3

205 KMPH, our top speeds on the Autobahn and we still had cars coming up behind us.  Harry is driving, I am navigating.  A fast trip to Nuremberg.

So many Christmas markets, so little time.
When people think of Nuremberg, they usually think of gingerbread, toys, Christmas, the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, or the Nuremberg Trials. The old town of Nuremberg is much more than this and indeed Nuremberg probably comes closest to many tourists' expectations of a typical German city: on the one hand one, can find half-timbered houses, Gothic churches within a medieval city wall in the shadow of the towering imperial castle, which was one of the most important residences of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.
The purpose of our visit to Nuremberg is to enjoy Germany's most famous Christmas Market. It is the 2nd largest city in Bavaria and each year, this city of 550,000 people welcome people from all over the world to the historic Main Market Square to enjoy this festive occasion.
We enjoyed our visit here and wish we had had more time to explore the city and its history.  We got  here around 10:00, parked the car, and spent the next 4 hours going from shop to shop, checking out the food, checking out the people, with time out for a typical German lunch at the Bratwurst Roslein.  No visit to Nuremberg would be complete without enjoying a Nuremberg sausage.  We did all these things.  We stopped at a local grocery store on our way back to Rothenberg and purchased a very expensive French Bordeaux wine for $5.00 and went back to the apartment for a meal of assorted cheeses, sausages, bread and of course, the wine.
Tomorrow we plan to leave around 9:00 for a 3 hour drive to Ehrwald, Austria.  If the weather is clear, we will take the cable car to the top of the Zugspitz.
I said the drive would be about 3 hours..maybe...maybe not.  We have about a 250 KM stretch on the autobahn.  Did I say Harry is driving?

Dinkelsbuhl..the Christmas market continues..Day2

After a good night's sleep, trying to cope with the jet lag, we had breakfast with Harry and Amanda.  Amanda and Linda bought some Apple Strudel at a nearby bakery last night.  We had that, along with coffee. Then Harry got the Volvo out of the garage and we drove to Dinkelsbuhl. It is thought that this settlement saw its first origins around 730 AD with the name of Dinkelsbuhl first recorded in 1188.  It is a former Free Imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Today it is now a part of the state of Bavaria.  In WWII the city was unscathed and was spared from Allied bombing. (except for a broken window in St George's Ministry). An almost unspoilt townscape dating back over 400 years, mighty churches, proud patrician houses, and enchanting semi-timbered houses make Dinkelsbühl, “one of the closely packed and best preserved medieval towns in Germany”, say art historians. Behind the Curtain (again) Day 14

It is going home time.  This trip has been in the planning stage for over the year.  Now, all that is left to do is board our plane in Frankfurt and head for Atlanta.  We left Riquewihr, France and headed for  Frankfurt, Germany.  Our plans are to stay overnight and catch an early flight home on Monday.  While the Christmas market was behind us, we had one more stop to make.  We made a visit to one of the forts that make up the Maginot Line. The Germans treated the French badly during WWI and after the war, the French decided to build a series of forts, obstacles, and weapons installations along the border between these respective countries.  This work was done in the 1930's, and it was thought it would deter German aggression. The French military extolled the Line as a work of genius.  They felt it would slow any invasion force of the Germans long enough for the French to mobilize its army and send the Germans back across the Rhine.  ...
