Holtzwihr, Selestat & Strasbourg Day9

This trip is not devoted entirely to the European Christmas Markets. We visited the WWII battlefield in Holtswihr, a Tuesday farmers market in Selestat, a Christmas market in Strasbourg, and Linda and Amanda entertained us while they were trying to operate a French washer/dryer combination.  I just wish we had video.

Today we visited the Alsace town of Holtzwihr.  There was a major WWII battle when the German Army made a counterattack against elements of the U.S.Army 3rd Infantry Division.  This combat action took place on 27 January 1945.  Over 250 German soldiers and 6 Panther tanks launched the attack.  Unfortunately for the Germans, they ran into Lt. Audie L. Murphy.  Before that day was done Lt Murphy, at great risk of his life, was able to thwart the German attack and hold the American position.  The security of the 3rd Infantry Division was held in the balance.

Afterwards we drove to Selestat and enjoyed  the local farmers market.  Then we boarded a train to Strasbourg for the Christmas market.  Strasbourg is on an island and has 5 markets.  We visited every one.  We took the train back to Selestat, got our car, and drove back to Riquewihr.  On the way back we stopped in at the local grocery store and bought some French lasagna for dinner.  After dinner, we watched with interest as Linda and Amanda made an attempt to operate the washing machine.  I do have pictures.
