Garmisch- Partenkirchen Day 6

We got up this morning to a tremendous snowfall
during the night. The snow continued.  I built a fire, we had coffee, and watched the snow fall.  When the clouds started lifting around 10:00 a.m., we drove into Garmisch.
Our day was spent in the Garmisch area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.  This a ski town located in southern Germany in Bavaria.  Originally this was two separate cities, until 1935, when Hitler had them combine as one in preparation for the 1936 Winter Olympics.  Partenkirchen saw its earliest origins in A.D. 15, and Garmisch came into existence some 800 years later.

As I mentioned the 1936 Winter Olympics were held here, it is also the site of the "George Marshall Center for European Security".  The number one tourist attraction is the Partnach Gorge. This is a "don't miss attraction" for any visitor to the Garmisch area.  It is a 25 minute hike back into the mountain.  The views of the ice and rock formations are stunning.  It is the closest to kayaking whitewater rapids you can get and not get wet.

So this is what we did today...  shopping in downtown Garmisch along with lunch.  This time we were successful in ordering and getting soup.  Afterward we went to the Olympic Stadium for their world famous apple strudel and hot chocolate.  You should notice a trend here, snow..hot chocolate. At this time we left the stadium and hiked into the Partnach Gorge.  We hiked, we saw, we took pictures.

Afterwards, we returned to Ehrwald, went to the local Spar grocery store, and then stopped at the local gasthof/ pizzeria for dinner. Our waiter was tri-lingual.  He spoke Italian, German, and French. We spoke none.  Another communications' challenge.  I believe that beer and pizza is universal, and we had a good meal.

This is our last day in Bavaria, tomorrow we will travel to the Alsace-Lorraine region of France.  A five hour drive to a medieval village of Riquewihr.  I just wish I had spent more time on European history when I was in high school.

One other thing, the residents of Partenkirchen resent that this area is referred to as only Garmisch.
