Cité de l’Automobile, (City of the Automobile) Day 10
Back on the Christmas market trail today. We got a late start. After our morning croissants and coffee, by the time we dressed and made our departure, it was after 11:00 a.m. We are on holiday, after all. We drove south to the city of Mulhouse. The first written records of this city date back to the 12th century. It is located in eastern France, close to the Swiss and German borders. The 2nd largest city in the Alsace. This is not just a small village. Our intent was to drop the ladies off in the center of Mulhouse and then Harry and I were going to tour the auto museum. However, due to the traffic, Harry and I decided to stay with the wives and visit the museum afterwards. We stopped for lunch at a good little French restaurant, toured the market, and went to the museum.
A visit to the museum came highly recommended by friends of ours who had visited it on a previous trip. I must say, when we walked into the main floor we were very impressed with the 400 historic, famous, expensive cars we saw on display. The museum is located in a restored mill factory and our host drove us around the displays on a golf cart buggy before we started to view them on foot. This collection was amassed through the years, beginning in the 1930's by the Schlumpf brothers. It is now owned by the City of Mulhouse and the Alsace commune.
Over the years, the famous Schlumpf brothers collected the most beautiful and fastest vehicles! Come over to admire the marvelous Bugatti Royale, the Rolls Royces ,and Ferraris! It is the largest displayed collection of automobiles and contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of Bugatti motor vehicles in the world.
If you enjoy looking at rare, vintage automobiles, this is a place for you. We took up several rolls of film of these cars, I will post a few of them now.
Initially the girls chose to pass on the car museum. It started raining at the market and they decided to join us. In their words "they were blown away".
