A Winter Wonderland Day 5

Often when you have taken a trip to anywhere, you want to return to that location and renew a good experience you had before.  Several years ago, the 4 of us along with several other friends visited Europe on a trip sponsored by the Auburn Alumni Association.  A great trip it was.  One of the excursions we took on that trip was to travel to Seefeld, Austria.  The purpose was a horse drawn sleigh ride through the surrounding forest, deep in snow, wrapped up in blankets, with a shot of schnapps. It was a trip highlight and created a memorable moment.  This was one of the items  we placed on our  "to do list" while on this trip.  Another stop we wanted to make was to have dinner at the Fraundofer Gasthof in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.  This restaurant offered a traditional German meal along with German music and dancing. Linda and I eat here whenever our travels take us to Bavaria.  So that is what we did today.

Seefeld is an old Alpine farming village located 11 miles northwest of Innsbruck in the Austrian state of Tirol.  It's early origins began around the 10th century.  It has been the site of the Alpine skiing events from several Olympics. In the wintertime it becomes a fairy tale Christmas village.  This is where we spent the day.

We drove through a light snow to Seefeld and began our tour of the city.  After lunch we boarded a horse drawn sleigh and began our adventure. Before we started, however, we experienced another slight communication problem with our waitress at lunch.  We felt a light lunch was in order because we had plans to return to Garmisch to eat at the Fraundofer.  We all ordered Hungarian Goulash Soup.  We felt like our order had been misconstrued when the waitress brought our silverware to the table.  4 forks & 4 knives.  Surely this was not suitable for soup?  We had a great meal while eating a Goulash platter.

Back to the sleigh.  It was cold, it was snowing, we were wrapped up in big blankets.  We had schnapps to ward of the chill. The scenery was spectacular.  I am glad we did it.  If your travels bring you here, put this on your to do list.

Afterwards we stopped for hot chocolate and then returned to the car and headed to lower elevations before we were snowed in and the roads became impassable.

We drove back into Germany and had a great meal at the Fraundofer.  We had the opportunity to meet a couple from Washington, DC.  He was a FBI agent here on business. We spent the next two hours making new friends and being entertained by traditional German music.

Good friends, good food, good music, sleigh ride, lots of snow, great memories.
